Artworks

A pink neon artwork by British artist Lauren Baker titled High On Love, Pink. Two faces appear in profile, one on the left and one on the right, drawn in a single continuous line of glowing pink neon. Their noses and lips nearly touch at the centre of the composition, the moment before a kiss, and their hair and shoulders sweep outward in flowing loops and curves that fill the frame. The line is loose and expressive rather than realistic, more gesture than portrait, and its warm pink glow radiates a soft halo against the deep black ground. The intimacy of the almost-touch, held in light, carries the work's title: the intoxication of love. Lauren Baker | High On Love - Pink

  • (View a larger image of thumbnail 2 ) "A photograph of High On Love, Pink, the neon artwork by British artist Lauren Baker, hung on a dark wall in a dimly lit interior. The square black panel holds the continuous-line neon drawing, its pink tubes glowing so brightly at their cores that they read almost white, casting an intense rose-coloured wash across the wood-panelled wall and ceiling above. The flowing loops of the line drawing stand off the panel on small mounts, their fixings just visible. The room around the piece is otherwise dark, so the neon acts as the sole light source, bathing the space in pink warmth. The shot shows the work as an experience rather than an object: the lovers' embrace illuminating the room that holds it.

Two lovers, drawn in light. High On Love, Pink is an original neon work in which human features are rendered in glowing pink glass tubing, the line of the neon tracing a face, or two faces, the way a single continuous line drawing captures a likeness in one unbroken gesture. The title names the state the piece induces: love as intoxication, the heady rush of being seen by and seeing another. The work is the original behind Baker's celebrated High On Love print series of 2021, whose editions depict lovers with their features illuminated in hot pink neon. Where the prints freeze that light on paper, this neon makes it live: the tubes glow with the pulse of real light, throwing a warm rose halo onto the wall around them, so the lovers' presence in the room is felt as much as seen. Pink is Baker's colour of affection and the heart, and against the dark the glowing lines read as energy as much as anatomy, the aura of connection made visible. Handmade in neon glass, measuring 100 cm high by 70 cm wide, the piece hangs like a portrait yet glows like a light installation, at home above a bed or mantel where its warmth can be lived with. Signed and numbered from an edition of 6. £15,000.
