Mark Munroe-Preston Artist Biography

Early Life & Development as a British Artist

Mark Munroe-Preston is a celebrated contemporary British artist, born in Yorkshire in 1968, whose creative journey bridges photography, illustration and digital design. He studied photography at Wolverhampton Polytechnic, laying a strong foundation in visual storytelling that would shape his distinctive artistic style. After moving to London in 1991, Mark worked professionally as a photographer and digital illustrator for publishers, magazines and national newspapers before evolving into fine art. His diverse creative background gives his work a unique fusion of commercial skill and artistic sensitivity.

Landscape Inspiration & Creative Process

Mark’s landscape art is deeply rooted in his passion for exploring the natural world, particularly the woodlands, forests and rolling countryside of Sussex, where he has lived and worked since 2001. Inspired by long walks with his Scottish Terriers through Ashdown Forest and the South Downs, he captures original landscape photographs that form the basis of his art. Using innovative digital techniques, Mark blends these photographs with paintings, textures, drawings and found imagery to create atmospheric collages that blur the lines between photography and mixed-media art. Each artwork seeks to evoke the drama, colour and mood of the British landscape.

Thematic Focus: Trees & “Treescapes”

A defining feature of Mark Munroe-Preston’s work is his focus on trees - magnificent, living organisms that dominate both theme and form across his portfolio. These “treescapes” explore the beauty, structure and symbolism of trees, from delicate saplings to monumental woodland giants. Mark often titles his pieces with the GPS coordinates of where the original photograph was taken, turning each artwork into a geographically anchored landscape narrative and inviting viewers to connect with the places that inspired them. His art celebrates the vital role of trees in our ecosystems while offering collectors striking, nature-infused imagery that fits contemporary interiors.

Exhibitions, Limited Edition Prints & Artistic Recognition

Since exhibiting his first landscape-inspired work in 2017, Mark has gone on to show widely across the UK, with his limited-edition prints presented on brushed aluminium or fine art paper. This choice of high-quality materials enhances colour depth and light interaction, giving his work a modern, vibrant presence. Mark’s art has been featured in galleries and art shows throughout Sussex, London and beyond, earning him a growing reputation among collectors of contemporary British art and landscape printmaking. Based in the Sussex Weald with his family, he continues to produce fresh series of work that honour the natural world while pushing the boundaries of digital landscape art.
