On the Ski Slopes of History

Winter Sports translates seamlessly into Art for printmaker, Anna Marrow

Artists have long captured the magic of snow. During the 19th century, when winter sports like skiing, skating, and sledging became more popular in Europe, many artists began to depict these activities. Some of my favorite examples focus on skiing. This exciting sport makes for a perfect artistic subject, a pastime that can look as effortless as it is difficult and as beautiful as it is perilous.

Famous artists that have embraced their love for sports cover a huge range from Paul Klee, who harbored a life-long passion for Alpine subjects, often painting whimsical mountain landscapes. In a watercolor entitled Kleine Winterlandschaft mit dem Skiläufer (Small Winter Landscape with a Skier) Klee playfully depicts a skier moving through a wintery forest in his signature abstract style, to modern day Olympian artist, Laurenne Ross, who Skiing has been an integral part of her life since the age of two when she first tried the sport with her father, in the Canadian Rockies. Later, when her family relocated to Oregon, USA, she quickly found success and made the US Alpine ski team in 2006. She went on to compete in six World Championships and two Olympic Games. All through that time, she never lost touch with her artistic side.

Anna Marrow, painter & illustrator

Anna Marrow has been a printmaker, illustrator, and image-maker for over 20 years. Using household paints, biros, fine liners, pencil crayons and screen print, Anna has mastered the art of visual storytelling. Covering a breadth of styles from Pop Art, fantasy art to Street Art, her paintings and illustrations offer esoteric glimpses of urban and suburban life in weird and wonderful ways.

Anna’s practice combines diverse and disparate narratorial symbols from everyday objects to fantastical characters, often drawn from her own childhood memories of the 70s. A somewhat kitsch retro aesthetic also pervades her work; her use of bold and contrasting colours and compositions create an electric feel. Her Skiing scenes are a perfect example of art depicting the vibrant colours of nature in the Mountains. Keeping the fun element in her subjects, with her hand drawn lines, photographic imagery and playful splashes of colour.
