The Art of the Perfect Christmas Gift

Written by Soo Turner for Essex Life Magazine

We're getting into crunch time with Christmas just over a month away! Each year the adverts tell us earlier and earlier that Christmas is coming. But rather than the plenitude of plastic toys, exorbitant perfumes, or single-use novelty items, have you ever wondered if there’s an escape from the transience of traditional gift-giving? Buying art as a gift is incredibly fulfilling and expresses to the recipient that you have put genuine thought and care into picking something they will like. Art could be your best gift idea yet!

The thought of giving artwork as a gift may seem daunting but how many times have you seen a piece of art and thought “Wow! That would be perfect for so-and-so?” Few gifts are more memorable than art and taking the time to choose art for someone special is an excellent way to show how much you appreciate them.

If you are buying for your significant other, your best friend or your partner's Great Grandma it might be tough, but not impossible! You just need some great ideas. At Turner Art Perspective we have so many fabulous things that might tick the box!

One of our artists, Joe Webb lives and works in the UK, and is known for his hand-made collages. We love the way he creates simple collages which often juxtapose conflicting ideas.

Joe says “I started making collages as a sort of luddite reaction to working on computers for years. I like the limitations of it… using found imagery and a pair of scissors, there’s no googling for material and no Photoshop to resize, adjust or undo. There’s an element of serendipity in finding images that work together that can’t be replicated in the digital world.”

Joe’s artwork has been exhibited internationally and can be found in the Saatchi Gallery, 45 Park Lane and in the private collections of Coldplay, Eric Cantona, The Madden Brothers, and Janelle Monae. Webb also created an album cover for The Madden Brothers.

Another fabulous artist that we represent is Gavin Mitchell. When we asked Gavin for a phrase that best describes his work he answered ‘mixed up’. From his inspirations to his processes to his use of materials, all the way to the finished product, Gavin’s aesthetic is determined by an idea of disorder and deconstruction, pulling apart the ordinary to put it back together in extraordinary ways.

Inspired by early experimental collage artist Hannah Höch, Mitchell’s work is about a “journey of discovery” in which all “preconceptions” must be abandoned. The result is a body of work that speaks its own, unique visual language, built through layer upon layer of imagery, to create highly original and provocative works of art.

There’s no wrong way to give the gift of art, only incredible possibilities. My advice would be to buy with your heart and let the enjoyment of the art be your greatest profit.
