Original Works

A square-format artwork by British artist Lauren Baker titled Auric Aqua Mint Large, from her Auric Field series. The canvas holds a quiet gradient of cool colour: a muted grey-teal ground at the edges brightens inward through soft mint and pale aqua rings toward the centre, like light diffusing through shallow water. At the heart of the glow sits a circular disc with a rough, granular texture of white and silvery fragments, like crushed crystal or sea foam compressed into stone, catching the light in tiny glints. The concentric rings of colour read as an energy field radiating from the crystalline core, calm, cleansing and still. The work is presented in a pale wood-toned box tray frame that keeps the whole composition soft. Lauren Baker | Auric Aqua Mint Large (Crystal Rock)

Auric Aqua Mint belongs to Baker's Auric Field series, works made by listening to sound frequencies in a meditative state and painting the energy they generate, then hand-embellishing the canvas with diamond dust so the aura shimmers at the edge of seeing. The aura, she writes, is the electromagnetic energy field that is the bridge between our spiritual and physical body, and each colourway in the series carries its own frequency. This one speaks in aquamarine and blue jade: the tones of aquamarine are associated in spiritual realms with cleansing energy, and, as with the waves of the ocean, with trusting and letting go; the shades of blue jade are represented as a talisman of peace, restoring equilibrium to the observer. The meaning is carried in the material as much as the colour. Diamond dust across the fine canvas turns the painted aura into a field of light that shifts as the viewer moves, so the work behaves like the thing it depicts: an energy field, felt rather than fixed. In the Crystal Rock rendering, the shimmer takes on a mineral character, the surface reading like sea-worn crystal, water and stone in one field, which suits the colourway's message of cleansing and calm. At 100 x 100 cm, the large format gives the aura room to breathe, the gradient opening from a bright centre out toward the frame's edges like light through water. Ink with hand-embellished diamond dust on fine canvas, in a box tray frame. 100 x 100 cm unframed; 105.5 x 105.5 x 4 cm framed. Edition of 10. £4,500.
