Original Works

A circular light artwork by British artist Lauren Baker titled Portal To The Stars. At its centre, a disc painted in black-out ink and covered in hand-applied diamond dust reads as a deep night sky: black and densely sparkling, with individual glints of light scattered across it like stars. Surrounding the disc, a luminous aura of colour glows in a smooth gradient, pale blue at the top melting through soft cream and green into a warm rose at the lower right, the halo of a neon ring diffusing behind the dark disc. The whole circle sits within a slim black frame. The composition works as its title promises: a dark, star-filled portal held inside a radiant field, the void of space framed by light, inviting the eye to move from the glow at its edges into the depth of the starfield at its centre. Lauren Baker | Portal To The Stars
A styled interior photograph showing Portal To The Stars, the circular neon artwork by British artist Lauren Baker, hung on a deep indigo wall in a dark-toned living room. The piece's black, diamond-dusted disc reads like a night sky held in a ring of light, its blue, cream and rose aura glowing against the blue wall behind it. Below, a curved navy sofa with denim cushions sits under a black floor lamp, and a tall dried branch arrangement stands in a dark ceramic vase to the left. The shot shows how at home the work is in a nocturnal palette: the artwork and the room sharing a palette, the glowing aura acting as the space's soft, otherworldly light source. Lauren Baker | Portal To The Stars | In Situ
A macro close-up of Portal To The Stars, the circular neon artwork by British artist Lauren Baker. The photograph looks across the boundary between the work's two elements: on the left, the dense, granular texture of the diamond-dusted disc, its black surface sparkling with thousands of tiny crystal fragments like compacted stardust; on the right, the smooth gradient of the neon's diffused glow, pale blue brightening as it recedes. Between them runs the thin arc of the neon tube itself, standing off the surface on small black mounting posts and clips, its form visible here as structure rather than light. The view reveals the piece's construction: real glass tube, real crystal dust, and a canvas built up in layers, with the gap between disc and tube letting the neon's light wrap around the dark centre. Portal To The Stars is a door, presented as a circular field of white neon, diamond dust, ink and black-out paint. The artist's own text sets its cosmology: to understand the world around us, we need to understand the cosmos within us. There are 10 billion galaxies in the observable universe and 250 billion stars in the Milky Way; here we are, a tiny speck of dust rotating annually around a sun that itself orbits the galaxy. We are tiny, yet our tiny worlds are significant in our minds, and meditation, she writes, is the most powerful tool, the gateway from our world to the worlds beyond. The work's intellectual inheritance is double: ancient Greek astronomy and cosmology on one side, Einstein's theory of relativity on the other, the idea that time and space are not absolute, and that therefore there are many truths, many possibilities, many realities. The circular form makes the metaphor physical: a portal, a door to the stars, to the subconscious, to undiscovered worlds, to our fullest potential, representing inner and outer worlds and limitless possibility. The black-out paint darkens the painted field so the neon ring and the diamond dust's sparkle read against it like stars against a night sky, light emerging from a void the viewer is invited to step through. White neon, diamond dust, ink and black-out paint on circular canvas, in a circular black frame, framed diameter 132 cm. Signed and numbered from an edition of 3. £15,000.
