Original Works

A mixed-media artwork on a white wall and shelf: a white box frame holds dark grey canvas stitched with small copper sound-wave marks, while fine copper threads burst from its surface, swirl downward and gather in a loose nest on the white shelf beneath, one strand trailing further down the wall. Lauren Baker | Letter To Sol
A side view of a mixed-media artwork: a deep white box frame holds dark grey canvas stitched with copper sound-wave marks, while fine copper threads burst from its surface, spread outward in loose loops and trail down past the frame's lower edge. Lauren Baker | Letter To Sol | Side View
A close-up of a framed textile artwork: fine copper thread is hand-stitched across stormy grey canvas in broken rows like an abstract sound wave, with loose coppery strands erupting from the stitches and cascading down over the lower half. Lauren Baker | Letter To Sol | Close Up

In silence I wrote and wrote. The letters weren't meant to be sent. The energy of the writing was enough to express and let go. To let the ripples of the thoughts be free. The letters were love letters... Letters To: Myself, To Earth, To The Universe, To My Past Lover, To My Future Lovers... The hopes and the dreams, all released, all let go. And in this process, I found something. I found supreme freedom, as there was nothing left to say [1].Baker used software to translate the spoken word of each letter into sound waves; once photographed, she burned them and hand sewed unique threads to immortalise the energy of each letter.Letter To The Sun is the most elemental of the series. Glistening copper thread bursts out of the speckled grey canvas like sunbeams, then continues its journey beyond the frame: swirling, looping and spilling down to the shelf below, where it pools in a bright copper tangle, still radiating heat. Of all the letters, this is the one rugged enough to withstand the passage of time. Part framed work, part sculpture, it is the piece in the series with the most energy and movement: metallic thread catching the light as it pours off the wall.
