Original Works

A mixed-media artwork installed on a white wall and shelf: a white box frame holds grey linen stitched with small sound-wave marks, while glittering silver-grey threads spill from its lower edge, tumbling down and gathering in a loose tangle on the white shelf beneath, with some strands still trailing over its front. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Ocean
A side view of a mixed-media artwork: a white box frame holding grey linen stitched with sound-wave marks hangs on a pale wall, while shimmering silver-grey threads cascade from its lower edge and spill across a white shelf below, trailing over its front edge. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Ocean | Side View
A close-up of a framed textile artwork: fine silver threads are hand-sewn across grey-green linen in broken horizontal rows like an abstract sound wave, with loose glittering strands trailing and hanging down over the lower half. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Ocean | Close Up

Burnt scribbles were transformed into hand-sewn sound-wave letters to nature. During her ten days of silence, Lauren wrote and wrote, pondering on existence and considering that which is beyond the self. The letters were love letters; to her ex lover, to future lovers, to earth, to the wilderness, to the sky and the ocean. The loss, the hopes and the dreams, all released, all let go in the process of writing and burning letters. Baker used software to translate the spoken word of each letter into sound waves; once photographed, she burned them and hand sewed unique threads to immortalise the energy of each letter. Here, the letter refuses to stay contained. Shimmering threads are hand-stitched across the linen in the wave-form of the spoken words, then spill from the frame in a tumbling cascade, gathering in a soft tangle on the ledge beneath: the letter, written and released, coming to rest. The letters weren't meant to be sent. The energy of the writing was enough to express and let go, to let the ripples of the thoughts be free.
