A portrait-format textile artwork hangs on a white wall: a white box frame holds natural linen covered in small black stitched marks arranged like a sound wave, and from its lower edge long loose black threads spill down the wall, ending in soft wrapped bundles of yarn. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Fire
A close-up detail of a mixed-media textile artwork: dense black stitched marks cluster across natural linen like a sound wave, and dozens of loose black threads cascade over the frame's lower edge, ending in soft bundles of dark yarn. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Fire | Corner Close Up
A close-up of a hand-stitched textile artwork: small black stitch marks are sewn in broken rows across woven natural linen, resembling an abstract sound wave, while fine loose threads trail and loop across the surface. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Fire | Centre Close Up
A framed textile artwork hangs on a weathered concrete wall: a white box frame holds grey-washed linen stitched with black sound-wave marks, and long black threads spill from its lower edge, ending in soft bundles of dark yarn. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Fire | On Wall

Burnt scribbles were transformed into hand-sewn sound-wave letters to nature. During her ten days of silence, Lauren wrote and wrote, pondering on existence and considering that which is beyond the self. The letters were love letters; to her ex lover, to future lovers, to earth, to the wilderness, to the sky and the ocean. The loss, the hopes and the dreams, all released, all let go in the process of writing and burning letters. Baker used software to translate the spoken word of each letter into sound waves; once photographed, she burned them and hand sewed unique threads to immortalise the energy of each letter. In Letter To The Fire, that ritual of burning and release becomes the subject itself. Soft mohair yarn is hand-stitched across natural linen in the wave-form of the letter's spoken energy, its threads tumbling loose beyond the frame like sparks and smoke: the moment the paper curls and the words lift into heat. The letters weren't meant to be sent. The energy of the writing was enough to express and let go, to let the ripples of the thoughts be free. Baker's work explores the fragility of life and new beginnings born from chaos and destruction. At intimate scale, Letter To The Fire is a piece to live with slowly: a quiet, tactile work that rewards a close look, and carries a story you'll want to retell.
