Gavin’s East Meets West series challenges cultural norms by deconstructing our preconceived notions of Japanese culture. The layered images offer investigations into how East and West aesthetics can juxtapose and at the same time harmonise.
This series pays homage to the genre of Japanese art - Ukiyo-e 浮世絵 (pictures of the Floating World) which began in the 17th century. The genre indulged in themes of female beauty, erotica, folk tales and landscapes mirroring the rising hedonistic lifestyles of the merchant classes. This body of work considers the evolution and influences of western trends within the floating world composition.
