A framed textile artwork hangs on a white wall: a white box frame holds natural linen stitched with small grey marks arranged like a sound wave, and fine grey threads spill from its lower edge, ending in small soft bundles of wrapped yarn. Lauren Baker | Letter To You
A framed textile artwork hangs on a white wall: a white box frame holds natural linen stitched with small violet-blue marks arranged like a sound wave, and fine threads spill from its lower edge, ending in small bundles of wrapped yarn, with one strand trailing much further down the wall than the rest. A close-up of a framed textile artwork: small grey stitches are hand-sewn across natural linen in broken horizontal rows like an abstract sound wave, while fine loose threads loop and fall down over the lower half of the piece. Lauren Baker | Letter To You | Centre Close Up

Burnt scribbles were transformed into hand-sewn sound-wave letters to nature. During her ten days of silence, Lauren wrote and wrote, pondering on existence and considering that which is beyond the self. The letters were love letters; to her ex lover, to future lovers, to earth, to the wilderness, to the sky and the ocean. The loss, the hopes and the dreams, all released, all let go in the process of writing and burning letters. Baker used software to translate the spoken word of each letter into sound waves; once photographed, she burned them and hand sewed unique threads to immortalise the energy of each letter. In Letter To You, that ritual takes its most intimate form: the letter is addressed to "you", whoever you need it to be. Hand-stitched in silk across natural linen, the wave-form of the spoken words catches the light with a soft sheen, its fine threads trailing loose beyond the frame like the letter lifting out of the writer's hands. The letters weren't meant to be sent. The energy of the writing was enough to express and let go, to let the ripples of the thoughts be free. At intimate scale, it is a piece to live with slowly: quiet, tactile and personal, with a story behind every stitch.
