“Nocturne in Motion” forms part of De Souza’s ongoing "Surface Tension” series – a quiet choreography of line and language, where bold washes of pigment hold written fragments in a state of suspension between legibility and abstraction. Built through her characteristic layering of acrylic paint, gestural writing, and cut-out text, the work brings text into physical tension with the surrounding colour fields. The inner verse – “A jarring presence, / The recreation / Of performance” – threads through the composition like a whispered interruption, its energy echoed in the surrounding marks of pencil, graphite, and oil stick. The result is a piece that captures a nocturnal sense of movement and emotional charge, translating fleeting inner language into a vivid, performative gesture across the surface.
