Following the success of ‘Big Pink Bum’, the well-received silkscreen edition released in the spring of 2020, London-based artist Lucie Bennett continues her series featuring large-scale derrières with ‘Big Blue Bombom’. As with its predecessor, ‘Big Blue Bombom’ presents itself as a celebration of the ‘behind’, inspired by oversized works by artists such as Oldenburg and Newton. While talking about the work, Bennett says: “In countries such as Brazil, the bum is very much an object of admiration; something that’s purposefully drawn attention to especially whilst on the beach in cities such as Rio de Janeiro, and I thought it would be fun to reference this in the title”. Colour plays an important part in Bennett’s work and she spends time carefully selecting the perfect palette for each print. For ‘Big Blue Bombom’ she wanted to continue the ‘upbeat’ feel achieved in ‘Big Pink Bum’ and was keen to choose the right turquoise infused blue to match the hotness of the pink, should anyone wish to present them as a pair. Her inspiration for the background colour was vanilla ice-cream, referencing the beach and sunnier climes.
