Astral Emanations Light is a portal rendered in thread and light. Working in ink, wool and silk thread on fine art canvas, Baker stitches a pattern inspired by tribal markings known as scarification, made during ceremonies that acknowledge rites of passage. The threaded marks converge to form a portal shape, representing the path to higher states of consciousness realised after ceremony, while glows of subtle hue emanate inward toward a blank centre, the journey toward the light at the end of the tunnel: inner wisdom. The Light in the title names what is new in this 2024 work. Where the earlier Astral Emanations (2023) held its portal in thread and ink alone, here a white neon element is introduced into the white wood box frame, so the portal's centre is no longer only an absence but an actual source of light. The glowing tube embodies the work's promise literally: the blank centre toward which all the threads travel now shines. It is the most direct realisation of the series' metaphor, ceremony, journey and arrival brought into one object.Hand-embroidered over ink on fine art canvas and presented in a white wood box frame, the work measures 101.5 x 101.5 cm unframed and 106 x 106 cm framed. A unique original work. £8,000.
