A mixed-media artwork on a white wall and shelf: a white box frame holds natural linen stitched with white sound-wave marks, while feathery white mohair threads spill from its lower edge and gather in soft pale bundles on the shelf beneath. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Wilderness
A side view of a mixed-media artwork: a white box frame holding natural linen stitched with white sound-wave marks hangs on a pale wall, while feathery white threads cascade from its lower edge and gather in soft bundles on a white shelf below. Lauren Baker | Letter To The Wilderness | Side View

Burnt scribbles were transformed into hand-sewn sound-wave letters to nature. During her ten days of silence, Lauren wrote and wrote, pondering on existence and considering that which is beyond the self. The letters were love letters; to her ex lover, to future lovers, to earth, to the wilderness, to the sky and the ocean. The loss, the hopes and the dreams, all released, all let go in the process of writing and burning letters. Baker used software to translate the spoken word of each letter into sound waves; once photographed, she burned them and hand sewed unique threads to immortalise the energy of each letter. Here the letter is stitched in the softest material of the series: snowy white mohair, hand-sewn across natural linen in the wave-form of the spoken words, then allowed to fall. The fine, feathery strands spill from the frame and drift down to the shelf below, gathering in pale clouds, as if the words are still deciding whether to be spoken. The letters weren't meant to be sent. The energy of the writing was enough to express and let go, to let the ripples of the thoughts be free. The white-on-linen palette makes it the quietest work in the series, and one of the most moving: part framed work, part soft sculpture, it brings gentle movement to a wall and a story of tenderness and letting go.
