Mitchell's "Manga" collection is inspired by colourful Japanese woodblock prints known as Ukiyo-e. These "pictures from the floating world" depict an idealised hedonistic life and urban culture of the pleasure districts in major cities during the Edo period (1603-1868).
In "Manga I", Mitchell combines found images with his own reinterpretations, blending traditional Ukiyo-e motifs with contemporary Manga imagery. Mitchell plays with the themes of past and present, traditional and modern, by working with mixed media collage, photography, board and acrylic presented in a dark-wood box frame.
"Manga I" is available in Small, Medium and Large.
