The myth of Icarus has always stayed with Toni and often feeds into her paintings. Her exhibition 'Ambition Bird' focuses on the creative process and the unrelenting need to create - Icarus seems to symbolise the boldness and folly of the ambition bird, and for Toni he is something of a hero. Why not dare to fly too close to the sun, why not reach for something beyond your seeming limits? Surely it is a cautionary tale to keep people contained and in line. Maybe the figure in this painting could be a kind of young Icarus, dreaming, wishing, an acorn with the potential to be a great oak. He's learning to fly, so we will rewrite the story of Icarus and let him be everything he can imagine.
