Life in Layers Artist Biography

Early Life and Teaching Background

Will Storey is a UK-based artist and relief sculptor whose roots lie in two decades of teaching Design, Technology, and Art. On the South Coast of England, he drew on his rich experience as a teacher to hone his craft and artistic vision. His past role in education continues to inform his work, as he instils structure, discipline, and creativity in every piece he makes.

Artistic Process & Medium

Will Storey creates multilayered sculptural reliefs combining handcrafting and laser cutting techniques to shape sustainable birch veneer, wood, and mount board. His process begins in Illustrator, translating geometric and emotional ideas into pathways for a CO₂ laser. Once each sheet is precisely cut, he sands unwanted elements, primes, and finishes by hand - sometimes applying gilding and stencilling before bonding every layer into a cohesive, three-dimensional, UV-protected relief.

Themes, Narrative & Philosophy

Will Storey's sculptural work is deeply metaphorical, weaving narrative energy through his layered forms. He often explores nostalgia, emotional wellbeing, stillness, and perception, expressing these themes through geometric shapes that interlock and diminish in depth. His works evoke a calm, contemplation, and quiet choreography between order and imagination. His artistic philosophy invites viewers to pause, reflect, and engage with shadow and form in a mindful, meditative way.

Recognition, Exhibitions & Studio Life

Thanks to a successful grassroots crowdfunding campaign, Will Storey was able to build a dedicated studio on the South Coast - a space where he fully immerses himself in his layered relief practice. His work has been featured in prominent exhibitions such as The Other Art Fair, Art Surrey, and at Canvas Gallery. His art has found favour with discerning collectors who value the balance of technical precision, craftsmanship, sustainability, and emotional resonance that defines his sculptural reliefs
