"This painting began with the question of what
happens when marks accumulate — not by intention but by return. The gestural
cluster at the centre grew out of repeated layering, calligraphic gestures
dissolving into one another until individual marks lost their origin. The wash
beneath holds everything loosely, the empty ground as necessary as the marks
themselves. Both need one another to exist.

The title came from a found poetry process —
words struck through by hand until only certain ones remained, the reduced text
then embedded within the layers of paint. Present in the work but not visible
to the eye. What remains is the question: what gathers, and over what time" - Anika De Souza.
