Liz Pounsett Artist Biography

Training & Early Career

Based in Hampshire, UK, Liz Pounsett studied Graphic Design at Southampton College of Art before earning a Bachelor of Education in Art at the University of Winchester. She spent over 25 years teaching in Portsmouth, managing the art curriculum and teaching part-time, while gradually developing her own artistic practice. Her dual experience as an educator and practitioner has informed her methodical yet experimental approach to art-making.

Artistic Approach & Materials

Pounsett’s work sits at the intersection of analogue and digital, combining her own photography, found images from second-hand books, magazines, and vintage media, with traditional collage techniques. She describes her process as a way to “connect and combine different periods of time,” often juxtaposing contemporary urban scenes with classical paintings. This approach creates surreal, evocative, and visually playful compositions that challenge viewers’ perceptions of time and place.

Themes & Signature Style

Central to Pounsett’s art is the exploration of memory, time, identity, and cultural imagery. Her collages often place out-of-time characters and locations into new contexts, producing playful and sometimes humorous narratives. Through layering and re-contextualising imagery, she invites viewers to reconsider familiar visuals in unexpected ways, blending mid-century aesthetics, elegant figures, bold accessories, and everyday objects into striking, thought-provoking works.

Recognition & Collectability

Pounsett’s work has been exhibited in UK art fairs and is featured in private collections across Europe, the USA, and Asia. Her pieces appeal to collectors of contemporary collage, mixed media art, and surreal visual storytelling. Available both as limited-edition prints and original works, her art combines design discipline with playful experimentation, making it highly sought after by collectors and enthusiasts of imaginative, narrative-driven British art.
