Born in 1958, Paul Mellia’s career began following his graduation with a fine art degree from Southend College of Art (1976-1979). His initial role involved creating frescoes and 16th Century imagery for the Baroness De Vail in Paris, where he experienced a Bohemian lifestyle, drawing inspiration from renowned artists and sculptors such as Rubens, Picasso, Dali, and Gaudi. However, it was Warhol’s Pop Art that profoundly influenced him, prompting Paul to concentrate on his passion for Americana, inspired by childhood books. 'From an early age, I was able to paint them in fine detail. I aimed to bring them to life and reveal a different perspective of them.'

Today, Paul is recognized as one of the fastest-selling artists in the contemporary art scene, celebrated for his unique 3-D interpretations of iconic figures. His work occupies a nuanced space between visual art and popular culture, often straddling the line between illustration and photography, with a tendency towards fantasy. His subjects frequently include heroes from various realms, such as superheroes, Hollywood, and cartoons. While some pieces offer a purely aesthetic experience, others convey deeper existential themes. The vibrant, exaggerated colours should not mislead viewers; the narratives Paul presents explore complex journeys, revealing layers of meaning. For instance, the Joker reflects a profound inner turmoil, Catwoman exudes an air of defiance, and the Hulk embodies a brooding, introspective nature, echoing the artist’s own existential enquiries.

In personal encounters, Paul is more inclined to identify as a builder than an artist, and despite his success, he maintains a commendable humility. His playful demeanour and candidness conceal a deep sensitivity. 'I probably hide a lot of stuff,' he admits, 'and in the paintings, the truth emerges.' His fascination with life's dualities leads him to frequently explore themes of love, loss, and sexual fantasy, particularly in private commissions, where narratives unfold with greater freedom.

Paul has dedicated over 30 years to creating distinctive three-dimensional artworks that have garnered widespread admiration. He has collaborated with prestigious companies such as Mercedes-Benz and Marvel, as well as notable figures including Nancy Reagan, Seal, Lisa Marie Presley, Banksy, and Jonathan Ross, among other A-list celebrities.

His exhibition, Popular Art Culture, achieved a sell-out at the Sunset Boulevard Gallery in Hollywood within two weeks. Mellia has contributed to various projects, including the A1 Grand Prix, broadcast by Sky Sports in South Africa, where he created a unique canvas for the Nelson Mandela Foundation featuring Mr. Mandela and the 46664 logo. This artwork was auctioned at the Durban race, with proceeds benefiting the foundation.

Paul Mellia stands out as the first and only artist authorized to create interpretive artworks of Thomas the Tank Engine and Friends, celebrating the 60th anniversary of Rev W. H. Audry's iconic characters. Additionally, he is licensed to recreate Marvel characters for his impressive Superheroes collection. Paul has been a superhero enthusiast since the age of 4, showcasing his talent for drawing cartoons from such a young age.
