Shot of Love #2 is a new mixed media original which continues Steve’s exploration and celebration of iconic films . It is a homage to the icons of the movie industry, from celebrated classics to the more obscure cult indie films which have so inspired Steve’s artistic process. The composition draws strongly upon some of Steve’s major artistic influences - the archery target motif being one of these - which references his love for the work of Jasper Johns and Peter Blake. The use of the torn and collaged original film magazine which make up the background, also highlights one of his earliest and enduring inspirations, artist Robert Rauschenberg. The layer upon layer of graphic ephemera and film references are many , from his love of Hitchcock to the technicolour wonder of the Wizard of Oz. Cult classics such as Mike Hodges “Get Carter” and “Valley of the Dolls” are also in evidence but the layering and narrative of the artwork goes far beyond the obvious.
