The artwork takes its name from the 1971 Doors song, and the title
track from the album of the same name and the last to feature Jim Morrison before his
death later that same year. The piece seeks to highlight the gaudy pop brashness of period
and place, embracing the slightly darker side which is shared by the song in
its ode to the city of night and Angels. The writings of the Beat Generation such as Bukowski and
Fante also play their part, highlighting the underside of a city and its grittier
sub-cultures. The metaphors abound and the slightly darker symbolism of a city on
the edge pervade. Hollywood actors and the movies, artists and music are all in the
mix - a roulette wheel of jeopardy and chance.
