Kirstie Paints Biography

Kirstie Taylor is a contemporary British artist, from Billericay Essex and is best known for her colourful sculptures. Kirstie studied at college during the 80’s and went onto further studies at Central St Martins in the early 2000’s. She is influenced by popular culture and the work of artist and painter Michael Craig Martin. Kirstie is colour-led and intrigued by the combination of nostalgia imagery with popular culture icons. She is inspired by colour pallets, and they form the basis of her work. As a teenager Kirstie was fascinated by graffiti and loves to mix elements of her childhood with recent cultural trends seen today.

Kirstie’s artwork has featured on television programmes such as 'Grayson Perrys Art Club' and 'Joe Lycett Summer Exhibitionist' for The Royal Academy on the BBC, as well as on both national and international billboards. Her work has recently been bought by Giovanni Pernice and made bespoke pieces for celebrities such as; Fearne Cotton, Jill Halfpenny, Rochelle Humes, Una Healy, Natalie Cassidy and Jenni Falconer. She has exhibited locally over the past 5 years.

“I start with the idea of what the sculpture is, before sourcing it in fibre glass. Then, I decide my colours. I never have a clear plan though; I’m far more led by how the paint looks as it goes down. My sculptures often comprise of many layers; spray painting after surface prepping and then sometimes making and using handmade transfers and then hand painting before a final high gloss finish is applied.” – Kirstie Taylor.

The aim of Kirstie’s artwork is to give a fun, nostalgic, humorous, and whimsical outlook on life, by making statement pieces that talk for themselves. In the future Kirstie would like to focus on exploring inanimate objects as sculptures, painted to look like something spectacular. She would like to continue bringing to life otherwise mundane things.

“I’ve been around art and practiced it since I was a child. I’ve created small scale sculptural pieces as early as I can remember to show my Dad when he came home from work each night, and have since experimented in virtually every medium possible! I can’t imagine doing anything else, it’s a constant drive in my life and always has been.” – Kirstie Taylor.
